Welcome
to Short Story America!
Short Story America is dedicated entirely to the short story, which
deserves a return to the widely-read status this great literary art
form enjoyed in its heyday prior to electronic entertainment. Here
at SSA, you can enjoy both new and classic short stories, all of
them being of top literary quality. Whether you seek short stories
for casual reading, for the classroom or for the purpose of
developing your own craft as a writer, Short Story America is a
great library and bookshop for every short-story enthusiast. Here,
the reader does not have to log in, but rather can enter, read the
Story of the Week, visit the Classics Library (where readers can
enjoy stories in .pdf format) and can purchase short
story collections by single authors, as well as our acclaimed anthology series (signed copies
of Volumes One, Two and Three are available directly from Short Story
America). Volume One is also available on e-reader through Kindle.
Short Story America is a perfect home for teachers and students of
short stories. The Classics Library contains hundreds of great
stories, in free .pdf format for the convenience of printing out a
story for class. This format is perfect for margin notes and
highlighting during class discussion, or simply for reading and
discussing stories while using a laptop or tablet. For
cross-disciplinary study in the humanities, the Classics Library at
Short Story America also contains non-fiction classics of historical
and philosophical importance, like Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and
Second Inaugural Address, Jefferson's "The Declaration of
Independence," Emerson's "Self-Reliance," Thoreau's "Walden,"
Frederick Douglass's "On My Escape From Slavery," and many other
indispensable creations from the past. Even longer works of classic
fiction appear in the SSA Classics Library for your convenience,
including Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, Leo
Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Franz Kafka's The
Metamorphosis, Nikolai Gogol's The Overcoat, and even
Harriet Beecher Stowe's long and important classic, Uncle Tom's
Cabin. Short Story America is committed to continuing with the
addition of more older titles in providing what the National
Association of Independent Schools has called "a rich resource for
schools."
Short Story America also features the Short Story America Prize
competition in short fiction. All writers of short fiction are
invited to enter. Stay
tuned to both the "Contests" and "Festival" buttons on the main-page
menu here at the Short Story America website.
Please relax and enjoy the short stories at Short Story America.
We're glad you're here!
